Malvina
Reynolds was born Malvina Milder on August 23, 1900, to a Jewish socialist immigrant
family in San Francisco, California. In the late forties
(which were also her late forties) Malvina and husband Bud Reynolds worked
together
on
progressive
political
campaigns and she performed at folk music events in the Los Angeles area. She
had
been writing the occasional popular or political song since her late thirties;
by her fifties, she had increased
her output and added children’s songs to the mix. By the time the folk
protest movements of the 1960s came along, she had honed her skills and was ready
to take on the issues of the day: civil rights, opposition to the war in Vietnam,
and the right of workers to organize. Overall she wrote hundreds of songs, some
of great beauty and many displaying a sense of humor and wit that has endeared
her to performers and listeners the world over.

SATURDAY,
October 9:
Sword of the Spirit
performed by Magpie
8:00 pm
A one-act play based upon
the life and letters of John Brown & Mary Brown
by Greg Artzner, Terry Leonino, and Richard Henzel
Sword of the Spirit is a singular opportunity for the audience
to participate as spectators, as witnesses, to this telling of
the story of the famed radical abolitionist, this last session
before Brown is taken to the gallows.
Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino have researched
the stories of these dedicated and controversial figures in American
History
for three years, culminating in this moving and compelling work
of theatre. Their portrayals of the Browns give audiences an opportunity
to see them from a new perspective, not as mythical, fanatical
icons, but as human beings, people with human feelings, human strengths
and weaknesses, but with absolute dedication to radical, direct
action for a cause, a cause which would soon embroil the entire
nation in Civil War. More info at www.magpiemusic.com/spiritsword.html

the show on NPR's "Public
Interest" with Kojo Nnamdi. Real

Jez Lowe
8:00 pm
One of our very favorite
performers returns for a solo show this time. For the last
twenty-five years, Jez has toured the world, building up a
formidable reputation in the USA, Australia
and Europe, and gaining the respect of his peers and his audience
alike. Folk supremo Richard Thompson called him "the best
songwriter to emerge from the UK in a long time", and
his songs are among the most widely sung by
folksingers and bands around the country’s clubs and
festivals. He has a new
album just out, his 15th set of original songs of the North
Country,
and
the
BBC’s "Radio Ballads" - to which he contributed
twenty-odd songs won 2 Sony Radio Academy Awards.

Lisa Gutkin
8:00 pm
Grammy award winning
fiddler/composer/ singer/songwriter LISA GUTKIN is one of NYC's
busiest musicians. Her varied musical
palette has led to collaborations with a wide array of artists
in the United States and Europe, the founding of the 'Downtown
Celtic' group, Whirligig, to joining world-reknowned superstars
of the klezmer world, The Klezmatics, and to becoming a fellow
of the MacDowell Artist Colony.
Lisa began writing fiddle tunes in her
late teens, then larger instrumental pieces, and most recently
songs with lyrics. Perhaps the most highly acclaimed composition
of Lisa's career is Gonna Get Through This World, her first published
song, written in 2003 to Woody Guthrie's lyrics. It is being covered
by several singer/songwriters, used by dance companies, arranged
for chorus, and appeared on the album: Wonder Wheel with lyrics
by Woody Guthrie, which won the 2006 Grammy Award for "Best
Contemporary World Music Album of the Year." http://www.lisagutkin.com/

Finest Kind
8:00 pm
Finest Kind is the
remarkable folk trio from Ottawa, Canada whose exquisite harmony
singing and brilliant
vocal arrangements bring a fresh sense of excitement
and discovery to the performance of old songs. The trio's glorious
sound, served up with easy-going humour, has won a devoted
following across North America.
Finest Kind's vocal arrangements are
a creative tour de force. Tradition-based, yet curiously modern,
the
trio's harmonies are
an enchanting feast of opulent chords and ever changing textures.
The trio's amazing vocal blend has been called "molecular
bonding" by one reviewer: "Any closer," he says, "and
they wouldn't be allowed to do it in public." Audiences
invariably mention "goosebumps."
