Bill Smith & Don Woodcock

Master Adirondack storyteller and folksinger Bill Smith is the genuine article. He learned about the adventures of North Country’s old woodsmen from his father; from his mother he learned the ballads and songs that were popular in an earlier time. To those great resources he has added his own years of living as a logger, trapper, hunter, fisherman and guide. Prepare to laugh your head off at Bill’s tall tales, step back in time with his descriptions of country life in the old days, and get nostalgic when he picks up his autoharp and sings a Carter Family tune.

At the age of 14, Don Woodcock began playing the fiddle. More than forty years later, Don holds the title of Grand Champion Fiddler of New York State, having won the state championship contest three times: in 1977, 1979 and 1982. His peers say Don Woodcock’s playing is technically superb and he is widely recognized for having one of the greatest repertoires of traditional fiddle tunes anywhere around. Alice Clemens, herself a well-known traditional musician, said of Don Woodcock: “When [he] is playing, the music just seems to flow from his heart and soul. It reflects the inner goodness of Don Woodcock…The feeling and flow of his music is magnificent.”
