Half Moon

Nanne & Ankie and the Hudson Crew

Henry Hudson and the Half Moon is about the voyage made by Henry Hudson in 1609. In that year Hudson, under contract to the Dutch East India Trading Company, sailed from Amsterdam northward towards the pole to search for a northeasterly route to china. Against orders, Hudson changed course and sailed westward to search for the passage. After crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship eventually arrived at the mouth of the Hudson River. Hoping for the possibility of a passage, Hudson decided to explore this river, later named after him. The river was navigable up to the point where Albany now lies. There Hudson was forced to end the expedition. Because of breach of contract, he didn't dare return to Amsterdam and so sailed to England where other adventures followed.

The six performers are all from the Netherlands, and perform their original songs in Dutch and English.

Nanne Kalma
& Ankie van der Meer

traditional & contemporary Dutch folk songs
including Hudson
and maritime songs.

Nanne and Ankie Ankie van der Meer was born in 1959. Music was in her soul, if not practiced in her family, and at 14 she took up the guitar in order to accompany herself in song. In her late teens she was invited to join a Frisian folk group led by Nanne Kalma. That was the beginning of a life long career in music as well as a life long partnership with Nanne.

Nanne Kalma, born in 1949, grew up in Leeuwarden, the capital of the province of Friesland. After playing rock and roll for several years in the 1960s, his musical interests veered more toward a gentler, acoustic sound and the early 1970s found him performing folk music. He began setting lyrics of Frisian poets to music, expanding the repertoire of Dutch folk song. Ankie joined the group he had formed - Irolt - in the mid ’70s and, as Irolt parted ways 11 years later, they formed Kat yn ’t Seil with Marita Kruijswijk and Marian Nesse.

JakobJakob van Bethlehem (b.1982) – PhD student in Astronomy at the University of Groningen (NL)
Since his childhood Jakob has been involved in music. His main instrument became the accordion. He has created quite a furor with his expressive playing, and is now recognized as one of the leading accordion players within the Dutch folk scene. Over the years he has played in several groups and ensembles like the Frisian folk group Tizzmtog, with which he performed abroad at a very young age. In addition to that, he has been active for many years in the Frisian folk world, both musically and in the folk dancing field. Jakob has been in demand in the recording world, too, as a guest performer on the CDs of many musical groups.

AnkoAnko Bouma (b.1961) - Info-manager in the Civil Service
Anko isa member of the musical duo Ferbean. Ferbean sings newly written, often humorous, songs in the Frisian language. The duo has become incredibly popular and they are offered more concerts than they are able to accept. They have released several CDs which have become big sellers in Friesland. In the cycle of songs about Henry Hudson, Anko sings the Hudson parts. His instrument is the guitar.

Erik van der Pluim (b.1955) - Pilot with the KLM
Erik has been active for many years within the world of maritime music, as both an organizer and singer. After years of experience singing in various choirs and vocal groups, both large and small, Erik founded the group Dutch Courage, becoming one of its lead singers. With their repertoire in the Dutch language, they are invited to perform at many maritime festivals in the Netherlands as well as abroad. The group has released a recording of Dutch maritime songs.

RutgerRutger Dijkstra (b.1981) - Schoolteacher
Rutger’s first instrument was, and remains, the guitar. Over the years, though, he has become a multi-instrumentalist and is now a fine, proficient player of several other stringed instruments like the double bass, fiddle and mandolin. He has played in several Frisian folk-groups, like Tizzmtog, Kalis and Magenta. With these groups he became known countrywide and made several concert tours abroad. Within the Frisian folk music world he is also active as co-organizer of the yearly folk festival, Tsjoch. In addition to the recordings of his own musical groups, Rutger has been a guest player on the CDs of several other performers.
